"A Page of Hope: Building a Library for Aftercare Children"


Overview:

The campaign aimed to create a new library for the children residing in the Aftercare Home for Girls at Vellimadukunnu, providing them with access to a diverse collection of books to foster a love for reading and support both their educational and personal development. Organized during the tenure of District Collector Smt. A. Geetha IAS, the initiative highlighted the importance of community participation and youth-led social impact, making the library a collaborative effort that blended educational enrichment with social responsibility.

Activities / Programs:

  • Library Establishment – Set up with shelves contributed by Holy Cross College and books donated by several colleges, with Providence College (Autonomous) making the largest contribution.

  • Creative Space Building – An artist was invited to paint the library walls with attractive pictures and inspiring quotes, making the space more welcoming.

  • Book Collection Drive – Contributions were mobilized from students, local communities, and volunteers to expand the collection.

  • Cataloguing – All donated books were systematically catalogued for easy access and organized use.

  • Formal Inauguration – A celebratory event marked the opening of the library, attended by the Collector and community stakeholders.

  • Awareness & Engagement – Public engagement campaigns encouraged reading and highlighted the importance of educational resources for aftercare children.


Outcome:

  • Educational Support: Established a well-stocked library benefiting the children’s academic and personal development.

  • Community Spirit: Demonstrated collective action and community-led social change.

  • Resource Quantity: Successfully collected over 600 books, ensuring a rich and varied library collection.

Youth-Led Success: Highlighted the dedication and organizational leadership of DCIP interns in executing a statewide social initiative.
