“Spreading the Spirit of Democracy through Culture and Performance”


Overview: 

As part of National Democracy Day observance on 15th September 2025, the Kozhikode District Election Office, in collaboration with SVEEP, the Electoral Literacy Club (ELC), NSS, and student volunteers, organized a district-wide Kalajatha (Cultural Campaign) to promote voter rights, responsibilities, and electoral participation. Flagged off by District Collector Shri Snehil Kumar Singh IAS at the Collectorate, the campaign sought to reach young voters, first-time voters, and the wider public by using art, theatre, and music as powerful mediums for civic education. The Election Literacy Club of Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College performed the street play as part of the campaign.

Activities / Programs:

  • Street theatre and musical performances designed to simplify electoral messages for diverse audiences.

  • Campaign launched from Kozhikode Collectorate and taken across colleges and public spaces including JDT Islam College, Government Law College, St. Joseph’s Devagiri, Malabar Christian College, IHRD, Kozhikode New Bus Stand, and Kozhikode Beach.

  • Direct engagement with young voters, encouraging first-time enrollment and active participation.

  • Signature campaign inviting citizens to pledge their commitment to democracy.


Outcome:

  • Enhanced electoral awareness among first-time voters and the general public.

  • Fostered civic responsibility through creative cultural interventions.

  • Strengthened youth involvement in electoral literacy initiatives by positioning students as democracy ambassadors.

  • Generated positive community feedback for its innovative and participatory approach to voter awareness.
