Udayam

BACKGROUND

Udayam, initiated by the District Administration of Kozhikode under the leadership of District Collector S. Sambasiva Rao IAS, is more than just a street rehabilitation program; it is a story of hope, resilience, and transformation. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, which left many homeless and displaced, Udayam became a beacon of support, offering shelter, medical care, and psychosocial assistance to those most in need. The program’s core aim is to reintegrate individuals into society, not just through physical care, but by providing the psychological support needed to rebuild their lives.

Launched in response to the rising number of homeless individuals during the pandemic, Udayam began as a vital lifeline to offer immediate relief. Over the course of the program, shelter, food, medical care, and psychosocial support were provided to those seeking refuge. This initiative, built with compassion, saw the participation of key partners such as IMHANS, Daya Rehabilitation Trust, and ULCCS, ensuring the homeless received holistic care. Through this collaborative effort, Udayam Homes has helped over 1600 individuals find hope again, with 160+ successfully reunited with their families. More than just physical shelter, Udayam also offered health cards, empowering participants with healthcare access and life skills training, providing them with tools to regain their independence. DCIP interns played an instrumental role throughout the journey, taking charge of event organization, website development, visual content creation, and supporting fund raising events and public awareness campaigns. Their efforts helped amplify the reach of the program and ensure its ongoing success.
