Responsible Tourism Model; Chaliyam
Background
Responsible Tourism under District administration is about "making better places for people to live in and better places for people to visit." It requires operators, hoteliers, governments, local people, and tourists to take responsibility and action to make tourism more sustainable. This approach focuses on maximizing positive economic, social, and environmental impacts, and transparently addressing local issues for sustainable development.
The Responsible Tourism Model for Chaliyam aims to use tourism to create better places for people to live in, and then better places for people to visit. This involves enhancing the economic well-being of the local community without compromising environmental integrity, minimizing negative effects of mass tourism, and promoting respect for local cultures and heritage. Chaliyam was selected due to its population, natural resources, cultural diversity, historical significance, and the economic condition of its native people, particularly the sizable fishing community. The project seeks to provide an additional source of income and raise the standard of living for residents.
