Carbon Neutral
Kozhikode
BACKGROUND
Climate change poses a significant challenge to sustainable development, livelihoods, and environmental management globally, with rising greenhouse gases leading to unpredictable weather patterns. India, being highly vulnerable, aims to reduce its carbon footprint by 30-35%. The Carbon Neutral Kozhikode initiative is a comprehensive plan by the Kozhikode District Administration under the collectorship of Sambasiva Rao IAS to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions through various in-house efficiency measures and external emission reduction projects3.
Carbon Neutral Kozhikode is a comprehensive action plan initiated by the District Administration of Kozhikode, supported by local self-governments, to achieve carbon neutrality within the district. This multi-faceted project focuses on balancing carbon emissions with their absorption through interventions in energy efficiency, effective waste management, and nature conservation. It aims to reduce carbon emissions from homes, transportation, and industry, while simultaneously improving carbon content through the conservation of natural resources and afforestation. The project emphasizes a community-owned and community-led approach, with schools serving as focal points and student-driven "Green Ambassadors" playing a crucial role. The initiative quantifies greenhouse gas emissions in terms of CO2 equivalent for the Kozhikode Block Panchayat, encompassing areas like Olavanna and Kadalundi.
