Enabling Kozhikode
Background
Enabling Kozhikode is an initiative by the District Administration under the leadership of S. Sambasiva Rao IAS, aiming to provide comprehensive and integrated disability empowerment services through a community approach, which facilitates empowerment, equal opportunities, and full participation of persons with disabilities and their families. In partnership with local agencies, it raises awareness of disability rights and fosters inclusivity by empowering PwDs and promoting equitable opportunities.
The Enabling Kozhikode Initiative deploys a comprehensive multi-faceted action plan to empower Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) across all stages of development, from early intervention and educational support to vocational training, job placement, and advocacy for their rights. The initiative actively champions barrier-free accessibility, collaborating with various agencies to ensure full inclusion in health, education, and livelihood sectors. Key components of the initiative include a community-based early identification program, newborn screening centers, and the Disability Welfare Committee. Additionally, the establishment of Community Disability Management Centers (CDMC) and Disability Advocacy Volunteers plays a critical role in providing local support and advocacy. The initiative also involves model BUDS schools that offer specialized education and vocational training to PwDs. DCIP interns contributed to the success of the initiative, assisting with research, outreach, and facilitating various activities. They supported employment generation programs, helped carry out special oppam adalaths for PwDs, and participated in accessibility audits for Local Self-Government Institution (LSGI) engineers, ensuring inclusive infrastructure development. The initiative continues to promote a truly inclusive Kozhikode, fostering empowerment and equal opportunities for all its citizens.
