Saukhya

Background

Saukhya is a flagship public health initiative by the Kozhikode District Administration, led by District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh IAS. It addresses the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among children and youth by promoting preventive healthcare and healthy habits through schools, colleges, healthcare providers, and the community. The project includes programs such as Arogya Vidyalayam and Type 1 Diabetes interventions, creating a district-wide culture of wellness.

The Saukhya Project combats the rising incidence of NCDs among children and youth in Kozhikode. Through initiatives such as Sugar Boards, Water Bells, Calorie Boards, and Step Challenges, it promotes awareness and healthier lifestyles in schools and colleges. Type 1 Diabetes interventions provide Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems to over 250 children, while the Arogya Vidyalayam program helps schools create health-promoting environments. By integrating physical health, mental well-being, and nutrition, Saukhya provides a comprehensive district-wide approach to preventive healthcare, fostering informed and health-conscious communities.

Sugar Boards: Piloted in collaboration with Mathrubhumi SEED, Sugar Boards were installed in 78 schools, educating students on hidden sugar content in beverages to encourage healthier drink choices.
Water Bells: Scheduled hydration breaks in schools to improve water intake and reduce heat-related illnesses.
Calorie Boards: Display calorie counts of foods and beverages to raise awareness about healthy eating.
Step Challenge: Promotes daily physical activity with a 10,000-step goal shared via social media campaigns.
Stair Calorie Tracker: Tracks calories burned through stair climbing to encourage fitness.
Type 1 Diabetes Intervention: Provides CGM systems to over 250 children, making Kozhikode the first district in India with comprehensive CGM coverage for children with diabetes.
Arogya Vidyalayam: Schools earn health accreditation through programs fostering hygiene, nutrition, mental well-being, and preventive health.
Mid-Day Meal Survey: Assesses nutrition and hygiene standards in schools’ mid-day meals.

Water Bell Initiative: Launched across 100+ schools, promoting hydration and improving student health outcomes.
